year round NFL draft coverage... for the real fan

Kenny Lawler Scouting Report

Kenny Lawler WR California #4

Strengths: 6’2″, 195. Ideal height. Quick footwork and can escape press coverage without needing to be physical. More quick than he is fast. Can make guys miss after the catch. Elite athleticism and has a knack for the acrobatic catch. Shows flashes of explosive cuts in his routes.

Weaknesses: Has the height but doesn’t use it. Plays like a much smaller receiver who relies primarily on athleticism rather than size. Plays like a speed receiver but doesn’t have an elite second gear. Makes great catches but also has some ugly drops on his resume. Can be explosive in his routes but also gets lazy and rounds off his routes. Will stand around when he’s not involved in the play.

Overview: You can get sucked into the Lawler hype if you only watch his highlight videos, but a more thorough investigation of his talents turns up many flaws. The elite tools are there in flashes, but he just isn’t a consistent, polished product and there are some lazy tendencies in his game. I won’t be at all shocked if he develops into a quality No. 1 or No. 2 receiver in the NFL, but there’s a major bust factor with Lawler as a prospect. He’ll almost certainly land on Day 2 because of his upside, but I would feel much more comfortable landing him in the 4th round.
