1 | Dolphins | Jake Long | Offensive Tackle | Michigan | | Well we've had almost a full week think about this one and in the end its a solid but unspectacular pick for the Dolphins. Sure, they needed an offensive tackle, but Long isn't going to be the guy to turn this franchise around. I have doubts about Long's ability as a left tackle. He's a tough, physical run blocking lineman that may eventually prove to be better suited on the right side. | | 2 | Rams | Chris Long | |
Virginia |
Excellent pick for the Rams. While Dorsey wouldn't have been a bad choice, Long is the better fit. Adam Carriker, last year's first round pick, has the nose tackle position locked down and LaRoi Glover still has something to offer at DT. Long will team up with Leonard Little at defensive end, giving the Rams one of the better defensive lines in league. |
3 | Falcons | Matt Ryan | Quarterback |
B.C |
Some scouts love Ryan, other wouldn't touch him in the first round. I'm among the second group. There's no denying the Falcons need a quarterback, but why spend so much money on one here when a guy like Henne or Brohm would be available in the second round. If Ryan is a bust, the franchise is set back another 3 or 4 years. This was a risky pick. |
4 | Raiders | Darren McFadden | Running Back |
Arkansas |
This has looked like a no brainer since January. Running back isn't a huge need, but McFadden is just too good to pass up. JaMarcus Russell has been developing slowly, and will need to rely on a sold running back for at least another. McFadden probably isn't the next Peterson, but he is a great example of how a good, young running back can carry a bad team. |
5 | Chiefs | Glenn Dorsey | Defensive Tackle |
LSU |
Certainly not a reach for the Chiefs here, but not a great pick either. Their first two picks last year were both defensive linemen (Tank Tyler and Turk McBride). The Chiefs now have a lot of money invested in their defensive line. They probably could have found a trade partner and would have benefited from moving down, to save them from spending top five money. |
6 | Jets | Vernon Gholston | Outside Linebacker |
Ohio State |
This may be the best pick of the first round in terms of the player put in the best position to succeed. Gholston is a perfect fit at outside linebacker where he will be relied on to do what he does best: get to the quarterback. He is the type of player that could step in and post double digit sacks as a rookie. There's no reason he should be a starter from day one. |
7 | Saints | Sedrick Ellis | Defensive Tackle |
USC |
The Saints couldn't have asked for anything more from this draft. They came into the day knowing they had to move up to land either Ellis or Dorsey. In the end, they didn't give up all to much and still got their guy. Ellis will step right in as a starter at defensive tackle, likely bumping Hollis Thomas out of the starting line and possibly making him expendable. |
8 | Jaguars | Derrick Harvey | Defensive End |
Florida |
Great pick for the Jaguars. They gave up a total of four picks, but were able to keep next year's first rounder. The Jags have been desperate for a pass rusher for a number of years and they've finally got one. Harvey will be expected to step right in as a starter, relieving either Paul Spicer or Reggie Hayward of their starting duties. |
9 | Bengals | Keith Rivers | Outside Linebacker |
USC |
It was fairly clear the Bengals were going to take an Trojan here, either or Rivers or Sedrick Ellis. The Bengals absolutely had to take a defensive player in the first round and Rivers was an excellent choice. He joins some talented players at linebacker in Cincinnati but consistency just hasn't been there. He should take over the strong side linebacker position from day one. |
10 | Patriots | Jerod Mayo | Inside Linebacker |
Tennessee |
This was a major reach for the Patriots, but it doesn't mean its a terrible pick. The Patriots biggest need was depth at linebacker. Mayo will be given a chance to win a starting job at inside linebacker, but the Pats won't rush into a job he isn't ready for. At the very least, he'll provide some much needed depth at the position in 2008. |
11 | Bills | Leodis McKelvin | Cornerback |
Troy |
Very, very wise decision by the Bills to pass on Devin Thomas. He would have been a major reach, yet they came close to making that pick and probably would have, had McKelvin not fallen. Terrence McGee and Jabari Greer have no business being starting cornerbacks in this league and McKelvin should relieve one of them of those duties. |
12 | Broncos | Ryan Clady | Offensive Tackle |
Boise State |
| I like Clady, but I'm not sure how he'll fit in Denver. Mike Shanahan likes his tackles to be quick an athletic and Clady doesn't necessarily fit that description. He's a decent athlete for his size and certainly capable of playing left tackle in the pros, but he's not comparable to Matt Lepsis whom he replaces. The last tackle like Clady the Broncos drafted was George Foster. |
13 | Panthers | Jonathan Stewart | Running Back |
Oregon |
There was certainly plenty of talk about the Panthers taking a running back, so this doesn't come as a surprise, but do they really need one? You would think they would at least give DeAngelo Williams one year to try to carry the load at running back. Had they not landed Otah later, this would have looked like a very questionable pick. |
14 | Bears | Chris Williams | Offensive Tackle |
Vanderbilt |
Very solid pick here for the Bears. They needed an offensive tackle and they got the guy I had as the top rated lineman available. He's an athlete, and best suited for the left tackle position. The Bears are in an excellent position to let him learn behind John Tait for a season or two before taking over for the 33 year old veteran. |
15 | Chiefs | Branden Albert | Offensive Guard |
Virginia |
I don't see why the Chiefs needed to move up for Albert, but its a solid pick all the same. They've been interested in him from the start and have to feel good about getting a guy 15th that they once considered 5th overall. Albert best suited for guard, but may be asked to play right tackle in Kansas City, where second year guy Herb Taylor is slotted to start as of now. |
16 | Cardinals | D. Rodgers-Cromartie |
Cornerback |
Tenn-State |
Early in the offseason the Cardinals announced that former first round pick Antrel Rolle was switching to free safety full time in 2008, opening a major hole at corner. Its no secret they wanted to land DRC or McKelvin here and were thrilled when DRC was on the board. Its tough to as a guy to go from Tennessee State to starting in the NFL, but they may not have a choice. |
17 | Lions | Gosder Cherilus |
Offensive Tackle | B.C |
| Wow... Matt Millen strikes again. Don't get me wrong I like Cherilus, but this is a reach. Cherilus is nothing more than a right tackle, and only deserved to be a first rounder by a team that had a specific need and had some talent around him. This is a terrible pick, even if the turns out to be a decent starting lineman for them. They need too much help elsewhere. | | 18 | Ravens | Joe Flacco | Quarterback | Delaware | |
This was a fairly big reach for the Ravens. Flacco far from a sure thing, and at the 18th pick you want to get a guy that you feel very comfortable is the quarterback of your future. I'm not sure you can ever be too sure that a guy from Delaware is capable of making the jump the the pros that easily, especially since he could be the guy from day one. |
19 | Panthers |
Jeff Otah |
Offensive Tackle |
Pittsburgh |
| This pick makes the Jonathan Stewart selection worthwhile. With Jordan Gross moving to left tackle and Travelle Wharton sliding inside to guard, right tackle was open and Otah will fit in nicely. They now have a very solid offensive line and two good running backs. If Delhomme stays healthy they may enough for another run back to the playoffs. |
20 | Bucs | Aqib Talib | Cornerback |
Kansas |
| Not too much of a surprise here, although the Bucs did appear to be targeting a receiver. Rhonde Barber is 33 and slowing down and Phillip Buchannon doesn't offer much at the other corner position. This is a slight reach however based on my grade on Talib. He is a playmaker, but has far too many character concerns to really be worth the 20th pick. |
21 | Falcons | Sam Baker | Offensive Tackle |
USC |
| The Falcons front office and coaching staff is full of newcomers and they showed their inexperience here. Why on earth did they think the needed to trade up to get Sam Baker, and what draft board were they using that had him rated as the 21st best player? Sure, they need an offensive lineman, but they could have gotten a better value in round two. |
22 | Cowboys | Felix Jones | Running Back |
Arkansas |
| Yawn. I don't know anyone who didn't see this coming months ago. There was no way Jones was going to be off the board before the Cowboys and there was no way they risking waiting until the 28th pick for him. He's in a perfect situation in Dallas to be the exact same player he was at Arkansas behind Darren McFadden. |
23 | Steelers | Rashard Mendenhall | Running Back |
Illinois |
| Phenomenal pick for the Steelers. They didn't need a running back, but Mendenhall was just too good to pass up here. He fits in perfectly as more of a power runner behind Willie Parker. Those two will be a difficult combo to deal with in the AFC next season. They had other needs, but you can't pass on a guy like Mendenhall here. |
24 | Titans | Chris Johnson |
Running Back |
E. Carolina |
| I knew the Titans loved Johnson, but I didn't realize they loved him this much. Hopefully the Titans enjoyed Trung Candidate's NFL career, because that's about all Chris Johnson has to offer. In the right system he can be a solid contributor, but he isn't going to carry the load at any point in his career. He's decent second option and nothing more. |
25 | Cowboys | Mike Jenkins | Cornerback |
S. Florida |
| The Cowboys are now loaded at cornerback, especially if Pacman Jones ever gets his head screwed on straight and returns to the NFL. Jenkins gives them great depth at cornerback behind Anthony Henry and Terrence Newman. He is in an excellent position to sit and learn behind those two before ever being asked to take a starting role. |
26 |
Texans | Duane Brown |
Offensive Tackle |
V.T |
| This is one of the biggest first round reaches in quite some time. The Texans really missed the boat here. Brown's stock was on the rise, but not to the point where he deserved any first round consideration. This is probably a case of a team reaching for a guy they think can play left tackle, since there is always a limited number in every draft. |
27 | Chargers | Antoine Cason | Cornerback |
Arizona |
| Very interesting pick here. I think Cason is a good fit in San Diego even though cornerback isn't a major need. They could have reached for an offensive lineman or linebacker to fill a need, but made the smart move by taking a guy they apparently had as the best available player. Cason will be the 3rd or 4th option at corner for them in '08. |
28 | Seahawks | Lawrence Jackson | Defensive End |
USC |
| What purpose does this pick serve?? Darryl Tapp had a very solid rookie season and Patrick Kerney was a Pro Bowler. I don't see any room for Lawrence Jackson on their defensive line unless for some reason they've soured on Tapp or Kerney. This was a slight reach at position that wasn't really needed. A very bizarre pick for the Seahawks. |
29 | 49ers | Kentwan Balmer | Defensive Tackle |
UNC |
| Balmer is a very nice pickup by the 49ers here. I was surprised they weren't the first team to land a receiver, but you can't argue with the addition of Balmer. He has the size and strength to make the move to defensive end in their 3-4 system and should be counted on as a starter right away. He will be a nice addition to a defense that continues to improve. |
30 | Jets | Dustin Keller | Tight End |
Purdue |
| Tight end was certainly a need, but there Jets have other issues. They probably could have waited until the second round on a guy like Fred Davis or John Carlson. Keller will be a nice addition to the passing game but it just didn't seem like a need. With all the receiver available here it would have made more sense to land a guy like Malcolm Kelly. |
31 | Giants |
Kenny Phillips | Safety |
Miami FL |
| This was a necessary pick for the Giants. Gibril Wilson was a big part of their defense last season, but he's in Oakland now. Phillips will be given a chance to step right in at free safety if he can beat out Sammy Knight for the starting job. I think this is one of the true steals of the first round. Phillips was a top ten pick before Miami collapsed this season. |
