32 |
Dolphins |
Phillip Merling |
Defensive End |
Clemson |
|
A very good pick by the Dolphins here. Merling has the size to play defensive end in their 3-4 defense. He fell because of his recent sports hernia surgery, but he should be ready to go by training camp. |
|
33 |
Rams |
Donnie Avery |
|
|
|
And the first wide receiver selected in the 2008 NFL Draft is... Donnie Avery? I'd love to take a peak at the Rams draft board to see what other ridiculous rankings they had if they had Avery as their top rated receiver. Apparently they miss Az Zahir Hakim, because that's Avery's best case scenario. |
|
34 |
Redskins |
Devin Thomas |
Offensive Tackle |
Michigan St |
|
Finally the guy that most had going to the Bills with the 11th overall pick comes off the board. Thomas took quite the fall, and deservedly so. He was overrated because of his workouts and its nice to see that in the end teams didn't buy into it too much. |
|
35 |
Chiefs |
Brandon Flowers |
Cornerback |
V.T |
|
Very solid pick for the Chiefs. Ty Law is gone and Patrick Surtain is on the wrong side of 30. Flowers will be expected to step right in and win a starting job at cornerback. |
|
|
|
Jordy Nelson |
Wide Receiver |
Kansas St |
|
Terrible pick. I like Nelson, but what good it do for the Packers to select a receiver here. Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and James Jones aren't about to relinquish any playing time to a slow, undersized possession receiver. He'll struggle to see any playing time as a rookie in Green Bay. |
|
37 |
Falcons |
Curtis Lofton |
Inside Linebacker |
Oklahoma |
|
A good pick based on value and not need. He'll provide solid depth at linebacker and may even compete for a starting job. When you're as bad as the Falcons you have to make picks like this just to stockpile talent. |
|
38 |
Seahawks |
John Carlson |
Tight End |
Notre Dame |
|
No surprise here that the Seahawks take a tight end. If it wasn't Dustin Keller in the first round, it was going to be a guy like Carlson or Martellus Bennett in the second. I think its a slight reach for Carlson, but it fills a need on a team that doesn't have many holes. |
|
39 |
49ers |
Chilo Rachal |
Offensive Guard |
USC |
|
A slight reach here, but Rachal could step in for Adam Snyder at guard. He has plenty of upside but just hasn't reached his full potential yet. It's risky pick, but could be a steal in the end. |
|
40 |
Saints |
Tracy Porter |
Cornerback |
Indiana |
|
Fantastic pick by the Saints. They needed a cornerback and a defensive tackle more than anything and they got both in the first two rounds. They did an excellent job handling the first two rounds of this draft. |
|
41 |
Bills |
James Hardy |
Wide Receiver |
Indiana |
|
The Bills sure look like geniuses for passing on Devin Thomas in the first round. They needed a big receiver and got the biggest. Hardy isn't rated much lower than their first round target, Thomas. Two very good picks for the Bills to start their draft. |
|
42 |
Broncos |
Eddie Royal |
Wide Receiver |
V.T |
|
Mike Shannahan continues to make a mockery of the NFL Draft. Since taking over as general manager he has made terrible pick after terrible pick. How can you evaluate the receivers and have Royal rated ahead of guys like DeSean Jackson and Malcolm Kelly. Royal is a return specialist and nothing more. |
|
43 |
Vikings |
Tyrell Johnson |
Safety |
Arkansas St |
|
Great pick for the Vikings. Darren Sharper's career is winding down and its time to find some depth at safety. Johnson is a big, tough defensive back that can make plays against the run. He's a perfect fit in Minnesota. |
|
44 |
Bears |
Matt Forte |
Running Back |
Tulane |
|
No surprise here. Its never easy to predict second round picks, but I saw this one coming months ago. The Bears didn't hide their admiration for Forte and made it clear they would take him with this pick. Its a very nice addition. He'll either win the starting job, or this will be a wake up call for Cedric Benson. Either way, good move for the Bears. |
|
45 |
Lions |
Jordan Dizon |
Inside Linebacker |
Colorado |
|
I'm speechless... Matt Millen must be picking names out of a hat, right? That's the only logical explanation for his draft strategy. Dizon is slow and undersized. He was a tackle machine at Colorado, but when your defensive line isn't good enough to stop a high school team, you're going to rack up some tackles. |
|
46 |
Bengals |
Jerome Simpson |
Wide Receiver |
C. Carolina |
|
They did need a receiver here, but why not DeSean Jackson or Malcolm Kelly??? It is incredible that they honestly think Jerome Simpson from Coastal Carolina is better than those two. |
|
47 |
Eagles |
Trevor Laws |
Defensive Tackle |
Notre Dame |
|
The Eagles dip back into the pool for yet another defensive tackle. Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley haven't quite lived up to expectations as recent first round picks, and apparently they're ready to move on. |
|
48 |
Redskins |
|
|
|
|
Great pick for the Redskins. They needed to give Jason Campbell some targets to work with and they did a phenomenal job of getting him some playmakers in the first two round. |
|
49 |
Eagles |
DeSean Jackson |
Wide Receiver |
California |
|
At this point Jackson was too good to pass up, but he doesn't fit will in Philly. He can stretch the field and he'll be a great return specialist, but he isn't the type that will catch 80 to 100 balls a season. That's the type that McNabb needed in this draft. |
|
50 |
Cardinals |
Calais Campbell |
Defensive End |
Miami FL |
|
This could be a steal for the Cardinals. Campbell has a ton of potential but his stock fell all season while the Hurricanes struggled. He has the size to play end in their 3-4 system, and could be an instant impact performer. |
|
51 |
Redskins |
Malcolm Kelly |
Wide Receiver |
Oklahoma |
|
See comments on Fred Davis and Devin Thomas... They could have used a defensive lineman, but Kelly was just too good to pass up here. He will be an absolute steal for the Redskins. |
|
52 |
Jaguars |
Quentin Groves |
Defensive End |
Auburn |
|
It will be very interesting to see if the Jaguars move Groves to linebacker. He could play defensive end, but they already added Derrick Harvey in the first round. Groves is athletic enough to play either position. |
|
53 |
Steelers |
Limas Sweed |
Wide Receiver |
Texas |
|
Big Ben asked for a big receiver. Big Ben got a big receiver. The Steelers know better than to go against the wishes of their franchise quarterback (Andy Reid could learn a thing or two from them). |
|
54 |
Titans |
Jason Jones |
Defensive End |
E. Michigan |
|
Vince Young certainly would have a liked to see a receiver here, but Jones fills a need. The Titans depth at defensive line was once a strength, but after losing Randy Starks, Antwan Odom and Travis LaBoy it has become a major area of concern. |
|
55 |
Ravens |
Ray Rice |
Running Back |
Rutgers |
|
I like this pick, but am a little confused as to why they felt the need to add someone behind Willis McGahee already. Rice has what it takes to be a feature back in this league, but he'll have to really impress to see much of the field early on in Baltimore. |
|
56 |
Packers |
Brian Brohm |
Quarterback |
Louisville |
|
Great pick. This late in the second round very little is invested in Brohm and its a smart move to have an insurance policy behind Aaron Rodgers, who has shown very little thus far in his career. |
|
57 |
Dolphins |
Chad Henne |
Quarterback |
Miami FL |
|
Bill Parcells wasn't going to move up for Henne, but if on the board here he wasn't going to pass on him either. Henne is a perfect Parcells quarterback and could be handed the starting job right away. |
|
58 |
Jaguars |
Dexter Jackson |
Wide Receiver |
App. State |
|
Jon Gruden wanted to find the next Joey Galloway in this draft and Jackson could be his guy. Its a slight reach, but Jackson has the speed to stretch the field and is in good position to learn behind Galloway before stepping into a starting role. |
|
59 |
Colts |
Mike Pollack |
Center |
Arizona St |
|
Pollack played center at Arizona State but will probably be asked to switch to guard in Indy. This is somewhat of a reach, but I like the pick. Teams like the Colts that have few needs can afford to reach every so often for a guy they really like. |
|
60 |
Packers |
Patrick Lee |
Cornerback |
Auburn |
|
I'm not crazy about Patrick Lee, but many have him rated as a solid third round pick so its not too much of a reach. I think they could have done a better job of addressing their need at cornerback, but at least they got someone at the position on day one. |
|
61 |
Cowboys |
Martellus Bennett |
Tight End |
TexasA&M |
|
The Cowboys really didn't have any more glaring needs to address so this was a luxury pick. Jason Witten had a monster year in 2007, so Bennett will have a hard time finding playing time but every team needs to tight ends and the Cowboys were light at the position. |
|
62 |
Patriots |
Terrence Wheatley |
Cornerback |
Colorado |
|
This was a major reach for the Pats. Its a position of need, so you can't question the pick too much, but Justin King, Charles Godfrey and Tyvon Branch would all have been better options. |
|
| 63 |
Giants |
Terrell Thomas |
Cornerback |
USC |
 |
I might as well copy what I wrote for the Patriots last pick here. Although Thomas is an even bigger reach than Wheatley. They do need depth, but there were better players available at the position. If they wanted Thomas he would have been around for a while longer. |
