Rey Maualuga ILB USC #58

Ht: 6'2
Wt: 254

Strengths:
An elite playmaker. Plays with an intesity that rivals Ray Lewis. Shows the ability to shed blocks and get into the backfield and make plays. An effictive pass rusher. Good overall bulk and ideal strength. A hard hitter. Good ball skills for a linebacker. A three-year starter on one of the nation's top defenses.
Weaknesses:
Plays out of control. Not a desciplined linebacker by any means. Goes on his first instinct at all times which leads to some big plays and some big mistakes. Lacks the ideal height of an inside linebacker. Misses too many tackles by going for the big hit rather than wrapping up the ball carrier. May be better suited to make the switch to strong-side linebacker in the pros. Serious character concerns in his past; arrested on misdemeanor battery charges in 2005 - he's stayed out of trouble since, but it's something scouts need to look into further.
Comments:
Maualuga is the definition of a high-risk, high-reward prospect. When he's at his best he's unstoppable, but he's wreckless and makes far too many mistakes. With some good coaching he could develop into an elite linebacker, but he is far from a can't-miss prospect. His draft grades will have more variance from team to team than anyone else in this draft class; one team may see him as a top ten pick, another could view him as a 3rd rounder.
