Vontae Davis CB Illinois #1

Ht: 6'0
Wt: 204

Strengths:
Excellent size and strength for a cornerback. Enough speed to keep up with most wide receivers in man coverage. A very reliable tackler for a cornerback; can deliver the big hit, but also shows the ability to wrap up the ball carrier. Above average in run support. Adequate ball skills.
Weaknesses:
Looked like a potential top ten selection as a sophomore in 2007, but took a step backwards as a junior. Some character concerns in terms of the effort he gives on the field. Benched at one point this past season
Comments:
Younger brother of 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, which certainly doesn't help the impression that Vontae is a "me-first" type player, given Vernon's struggles to get along with Mike Singletary in San Francisco. Davis clearly has all the physical tools to be an elite playmaker in the NFL, but this is a deep class for cornerbacks and his character concerns could cost him a decent amount of money. I would be cautious before selecting Davis - his benching, and the fact that he turned pro after a sub-par year, raises some questions. Ron Zook and staff can expect a number of phone calls from NFL scouts, coaches and GMs this spring.
