NFL Draft: 30. Craig Davis WR LSU 37. Eric Weddle S Utah 96. Anthony
Waters ILB Clemson 129. Scott Chandler TE Iowa 172. Legedu Naanee WR Boise
State 240. Brandon Siler ILB Florida | | 2007
Analysis: | The Chargers really wasted this draft. Craig Davis is a decent prospect, but how can you take him over Anthony Gonzalez, Dwayne Jarrett, or even Sidney Rice? He wasn't a number one receiver in college and he won't be in the NFL. Eric Weddle is a perfect fit in San Diego, but he isn't worth 4 draft picks. He could be an impact player, but the trade could come back to haunt them if the Bears land anyone of significance with the picks the acquired. Anthony Waters is a decent pickup in the third round, but they really needed a better answer to their issues at inside linebacker; Matt Wilhelm and Stephen Cooper just aren't going to get the job done. Scott Chandler was an interesting pick. He had some value in the 4th round, but it certainly isn't a position of need. I think they reached a little for Legedu Naanee. They were looking for a speed receiver to stretch the field and I'm not sure he's that guy. They got a real steal in Brandon Siler. I wouldn't have argued if someone selected him in the late 2nd round, so to get him in the 7th round is highway robbery. He's a better prospect than Anthony Waters. Overall, this was a very disappointing draft because of the Weddle trade and because of the guys they passed on to take Davis. The Chargers front office is a mess right now following the Schottenheimer firing, and this draft did not help A.J Smith's image.

NFL Draft: | 19.
Antonio Cromartie CB Florida State 50. Marcus McNeill OT Auburn 81. Charlie
Whitehurst QB Clemson 151. Tim Dobbins ILB Iowa State 187. Jeromey Clary
OT Kansas State 188 Kurt Smith K Virginia 225. Chase Page DT North Carolina 7227.
Jimmy Martin OT Virginia Tech | | 2006
Analysis: | The
Chargers are already taking a lot of heat for taking Cromartie, but I like the
pick. You certainly can't expect him to make in instant impact, but he is an elite
prospect and had he gone back to school he would have been a top 10 pick in 2007.
McNeill is also a steal in the 2nd round, and could see some significant playing
time as a rookie. I love the Whitehurst pick. I believe he will be a future starting
quarterback in this league, and he gives the Chargers some insurance behind Rivers.
Tim Dobbins had good value on day two, and should be a special teams player from
the start. I'm not sure about the Kurt Smith pick, are they unsure about Nate
Kaeding? Clary, Page and Martin don't have bright futures as starters, but could
provide the depth that the Chargers need at those positions.
