Analysis: | Every year this franchise looks more and more dysfunctional and this draft only continued to raise questions for me. I'm ok with their first round pick of Aaron Ross. They needed a young cornerback and that was right around where Ross was projected to go. Personally, I don't think Ross was worth the 20th pick, but it wasn't too much of a reach. The Steve Smith pick is what confuses me. He's a nearly identical prospect to their second round choice in '06, Sinorice Moss. Neither one is number one receiver, and with Burress and Toomer's futures with the team in question, they are still going to have a hole at receiver down the road despite spending two top picks at the position. They also reached for Jay Alford in the third round. Defensive tackle was certainly a need, but Alford is nothing more than a backup. DeOssie is a decent fourth round pick. He isn't going to do much more than be a special teams contributor, but he could be a stud in that area. Kevin Boss is a decent small school prospect, he's very raw, but could be a solid backup to Shockey. Koets should provide some decent depth on their line, but they really needed an offensive lineman earlier in this draft. Michael Johnson is only a special teams player and backup. Safety really wasn't a need, but at this point they're only drafting for best available player. Bradshaw has a very good chance to make the team for such a late pick. He could be a 7th round steal and I wouldn't be surprised to see him push Rueben Droughns for the backup running back job. Overall, the Giants still have a glaring hole at left tackle, they made too many reaches, and they failed to address their depleted linebacking corps.

NFL Draft: | 32.
Mathias Kiwanuka DE Boston College 44. Sinorice Moss WR Miami FL 96. Gerris
Wilkinson ILB Georgia Tech 124. Barry Cofield DT Northwestern 129. Guy Whimper
OT East Carolina 158. Charlie Peprah S Alabama 232. Gerrick McPhearson CB
Maryland | 2006
Analysis: | The
Kiwanuka pick has drawn a lot of criticism, but I don't think it is as bad as
most are saying. Kiwanuka is a 1st round talent, and if the Giants were drafting
the best player available, I can't argue with their assessment. Strahan is 34
and can't play forever. Moss is a steal in the 2nd round. I don't expect him to
reach the success of his brother, but he is a solid #2 option to Burress. Wilkinson
is more of an outside linebacker than an inside man, but his football instincts
will allow him to succeed at the next level. They needed a defensive tackle, but
Cofield won't do much but provide depth. I love Guy Whimper. I think he is a real
sleeper, and could have been chosen as high as the second round based on talent.
I'm also a fan of Peprah, he doesn't have all the physical tools but he is a football
player and will get the job done. McPhearson has great speed, but will take time
to develop. Overall it was a solid draft, but they won't reap the benefits until
a year or two down the line when guys like Whimper and Kiwanuka develop into quality
starters. Grade: B+ |
