NFL Draft: 14. Darrelle Revis CB Pittsburgh 47. David Harris ILB Michigan 177.
Jacob Bender OT Nicholls State 235. Chansi Stuckey WR Clemson | | 2007
Analysis: | I think the Jets gave up too much in their draft day trades, but they did their best with the four picks. All the cornerbacks in this draft were a little overrated because none of them stood out as an elite prospect. Revis probably didn't deserve to go 14th overall, and the Jets would have been better off sitting back in the first round to see who fell. Many felt the Jets got a steal in David Harris, but similar to the cornerback situation, Harris never would have been considered first round material in most drafts. The depth at linebacker in the draft was the worst in years, and it caused some teams to overvalue certain players. Harris dropped down to where he actually deserved to be selected. It was a decent trade for the Jets, but it wasn't the highway robbery that some analysts made it out to be. Harris isn't going to match Vilma's level of play, but he does give Mangini another versatile linebacker to play with. Jacob Bender is a project with a long way to go before he develops, but he was worth the 6th round selection. He could prove to be a solid backup behind Ferguson in the future. I like the pick of Chansi Stuckey. He never fully lived up to his hype in college, but he is a playmaker and he should ultimately out play his 7th round selection. Overall, it was a solid but unspectacular draft. The Jets aren't as good as their record showed a year ago, and I would have liked to see them use more than 4 picks in this draft to stockpile more young talent and backups.

Analysis: | The
Jets did the smart thing passing on Matt Leinart. Pennington is capable of leading
this team, especially with guys like Ferguson and Mangold anchoring their offensive
line. I think they took Clemens too early. He is injury prone, and hasn't really
proven himself over the long term. I like his ability, but there were other players
that could have bolstered their defense available at that position. Schlegel is
a smart football player, but the 3rd round was too early to draft an overachiever
like him. Eric Smith, Drew Coleman and Titus Adams all fill positions of need,
but won't have any impact early on. Brad Smith is an interesting pick. He is a
developmental guy with some potential but I was surprised to see him off the board
so early. I like Leon Washington. He's a strong, physical running back that will
look good backing up Curtis Martin. I was shocked to hear Jason Pociask's name
called at all over draft weekend. He was a backup that doesn't show much upside.
Overall a solid draft for the future, but they failed to land much help at either
linebacker or cornerback. Grade: B |
